SUNDAY JAZZ
How seven Jazz artists from across New England take on The Newport Jazz Festival,
representing the depth of Jazz rooted within New England
More than just jazz artists. More than just a band. It’s a community. It’s family.
Tucked away on a tight street in the suburbs of Providence, and wedged between two classic Rhode Island multi-family homes, is what appears to be a small social club and restaurant. On the first approach you wouldn’t think of it as more than someone’s house with a nice big patio. It was quaint, unmarked. But as you approach, you can hear the sounds of melodic saxophones, a heartbeat erupting from the strings of a bass, and nothing but soul and energy intertwined through drums, piano, flute, and guitar emerging from within.
This place is called the Courtland Club.
And that music? Comes from a group and weekly session known as Sunday Jazz. Through their talent and the community that they have built, it has garnered them a place on the Harbor stage at the Newport Jazz Festival.
Sunday Jazz is a weekly event hosted by The Courtland Club in Providence, Rhode Island that allows Jazz artists from around the region to come and perform. However, a group of several New England based jazz artists will be representing the group and the essence of Sunday Jazz, by taking one of the main stages at the Newport Jazz festival for the first time.
